Why has your Dentist recommended a Zirconia Crown?
Zirconia is an extremely tough white crystalline ceramic material. It is derived
from zircon sand. It is much stronger than a tooth enamel. Up to ten times
stronger.
Zirconia is highly inert and thus is very biocompatible with the tissues of the oral cavity. It also has low thermal conductivity for less post-op sensitivity. Zirconia resists wear and abrasion, making it preferable for patients who grind or clench
their teeth. Being resistant to harsh chemicals makes zirconia favorable in patients with a more acidic oral environment.
With the high cost of gold, poor gum tissue response to certain dental metals, and zirconia's many favorable properties. The use of zirconia in dentistry has increased dramatically. In our office, the use of digital impressions has led to digital fabrication of crowns and bridges in the dental laboratory. With improved outcomes for patients
